International Conference on English language Teaching holds in Malacca this November

Come November this year, there will be a conference on English language teaching which seems set to deliver what it promises. Some of the world’s best English language experts, including poets, actors and writers will come together for the international conference in Malacca.

There is the star-studded list of featured speakers beginning with renowned performance poet Valerie Bloom whose name will be familiar to English teachers as the writer of the poem ‘The River’ which is part of the literature component in the Malaysian secondary school English syllabus.

After countless times of going through a certain literary text in your classroom, it will be quite another experience altogether to watch the poet herself in action. Born and raised in Jamaica, Bloom was brought up reading Yeats and Wordsworth. Her enchantment with literature began at a very early age and she recalls how as a child she used to write her poems and stories high up in the trees she climbed.

At the age of 12, she had her first story published . After she moved to England in 1979, Bloom tried her hand as a librarian, arts officer and even steel band instructor and began writing and performing regularly. She earned an honours degree, from the University of Kent at Canterbury, and was later awarded an honorary Master’s degree.

ICELT 2013 (International Conference on English language Teaching) will be held from November 18th to 20th at the Equatorial Hotel, Malacca. It has a novel theme: Experiment, Engage, Enchant: Rocking ELT with New Rhythms.

It is organised by Universiti Putra Malaysia and ELS Language Centres, Malaysia. Other featured speakers are Paul Cookson, the only poet to win the National Reading Hero Award; Jan Blake who is one of Europe’s leading and storytelling consultant to the National Theatre, the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Battersea Arts Centre; Stan Cullimore who composes music and songs for children’s television including Nickelodeon and other well-known speakers like Alan Maley, Andrew Wright, Dr N S Prabhu and Pearlly Chua.

Attend the Nigeria Network of NGO’s (NNNGO) Annual Conference to be held in Lagos this November

An Overview

The 2012 Annual Conference was about reviewing past relationships and partnerships with government/private sector, present and future opportunities. The 13th Annual Conference will focus on how best to continue growing our support for the government in developing our country-Nigeria under the theme: “Evolving with Our Sector: Finding Alternatives to Funding our Work”.

The over 100 civil society, government and private sector organizations that gathered in Lagos, last year engaged in intense and collaborative sessions to review our relationship with government, assess our accountability as a sector and draw up a road map for the Network. The 2013 NNNGO Annual Conference will serve as a platform to discuss alternative funding for our work as a sector. Attendees will have the opportunity of learning first-hand how best to sustain their work.

Last year attendees of the Annual Conference came from the six geopolitical zones of the country, delivering the key note address was Ambassador Joe Keshi Former Permanent Secretary Ministry of Foreign Affairs; other speakers include Former CEO Oxfordshire Equality and Human Rights Council Patrick Tolani, Former Pan African Relationships Manager Plan International Dr Abiola Tilley-Gyado, Henrietta Onwuegbuzie Pan African University and President African Citizens Development Foundation Otunba Dele Ajayi-Smith.

We were also joined by the Special Control Unit against Money Laundering (SCUML) of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), whose thought provoking presentations challenged the civil society community to review its way of working in line with the 2011 anti-money laundering act.

Live your dream: Meet Ordinary People with Extraordinary Stories in Lagos this September

From Bankole Williams

Hi Friends,

A few people have asked me how I was able to boldly leave the banking profession and plunge into my current career as a Management Consultant.

A few others wonder if their class of degree is a prerequisite for success, yet after spending 14 YEARS in school and graduating in 2009 with a 3RD CLASS, FUNMIKE OLAYERA is now a Regional Coordinator in 21st Century Technologies.
