Be part of the Port Harcourt World Book Capital City 2014 Events

About
The city of Port Harcourt, located in the heart of the Niger Delta Region, Nigeria has just been declared the UNESCO World Book Capital City for 2014

Description
PORT HARCOURT, WORLD BOOK CAPITAL

The title ‘World Book Capital’ is conferred by UNESCO on a city in recognition of the quality of its programmes to foster the promotion of books and to encourage reading. The scheme was launched in 2001 with Madrid as the first city to be given the title, followed by Alexandria in 2002 and New Delhi in 2003. Bangkok was most recently selected as the 2013 World Book Capital.

Rainbow Book Club submitted a bid to UNESCO with the support of the Rivers State government that led to the emergence of Port Harcourt as the UNESCO World Book Capital 2014, the first sub-Saharan city to receive this honour! With the theme: Books: Windows to our World of Possibilities, Port Harcourt beat 10 other contenders to clinch this nomination. Undoubtedly, this honour will have a catalytic effect on the Niger Delta region, creating an army of social change agents who, informed and empowered by reading, will work collaboratively to build a peaceful, prosperous and just society. 2014 also marks 100 years since Nigeria was formed by the British colonial government. This milestone in Nigeria’s history presents a unique occasion for positive change. That is our hope, and it is one we are already working towards through the support of activities such as the Port Harcourt Book Festival (formerly the Garden City Literary Festival) and the ‘Get Nigeria Reading Again!’ campaign.

We invite you to partner with us as we prepare for Port Harcourt’s special tenure as World Book Capital 2014. As you browse through our website, we hope you will identify areas in which you may partner with us for change. Indeed, with financial and logistical support from the government of Rivers State and various private stakeholders, Port Harcourt will be adequately prepared to host the wide-ranging series of activities outlined in our bid.

General information

With Port Harcourt as UNESCO’s World Book Capital for 2014, a series of programmes have been planned to take place throughout the year, with the ultimate aim of increasing reading and improving literacy within Port Harcourt city, its ripple effects reaching the nation and the larger sub-region. All activities have been designed so as to engage stakeholders at all levels within the book industry, from readers, writers, publishers, book sellers, library users, to librarians and educational institutions.

To view the rest of the scheduled events, download the bid summary. A selection of programmes are outlined below:

1. The Walking Book

Children in pre-selected Junior Secondary schools in all 6 geo-political zones in the country will be engaged in writing a chapter each of what will become a book on the diverse cultures of Nigeria.

2. Book Clubs in schools

Targeting Senior Secondary schools in Port Harcourt, 100 reading clubs will be set up within the city. Students will have to read a pre-selected book of the month and meet weekly to discuss the book. These clubs are designed to encourage students to read for entertainment and information.

3. Reading Tree (RT)

A weekly, graded, reading programme for primary school students, the Reading Tree comprises carefully selected books ranging from timeless classics to African classics. As children ascend the reading tree, they will get rewarded.

4. Writers in Residency

A list of aspiring and established writers will be selected from applicants based in Port Harcourt. For the duration of the World Book Capital year, they will write stories inspired by our theme: Books: Windows to our World of Possibilities. These stories will then be published in an anthology.

5. Multi-Purpose Port Harcourt Book Centre Opening

This facility is planned as a literary hub for the city with a state-of-the-art library, a theatre, a conference centre, training rooms, a bookshop selling books at discount prices, among other things. The Book Centre will make books more accessible to the city’s populace.

6. Book-of-the-Month

For the duration of the World Book Capital year, the city will focus on a book each month. The books to feature will be carefully selected to present the best of the variety that Nigeria and Africa have to offer.

7. Drama Performances

A drama performance is planned for each month of the WBC year, each of which will be based on the book-of-the-month. The performances are geared to create an awareness of the book in focus, resurrect the performing arts and present the theatre as an alternative entertainment in the city.

8. The Port Harcourt Book Festival

The annual Port Harcourt Book Festival (formerly Garden City Literary Festival), a week-long programme celebrating literature, brings together representatives from the book chain industry. In 2014, the festival will be in its 7th year, and will be a great platform to showcase some of the other WBC activities.

9. Library Support Programme

The Rivers State Government recently renovated over 100 public primary and secondary schools, all equipped with libraries. A book donation drive will be set up, targeting corporate and faith-based organizations as well as the general public to donate books or funds to the schools for their libraries.

10. Essay Competition

An essay competition to mark Nigeria’s centenary will be launched nationwide. Winners will be recognized and rewarded at the Port Harcourt Book Festival (formerly Garden City Literary Festival) that year.

11. Symposia

The year-long World Book Capital activities will include various symposia aimed at bringing together various stakeholders for discourse over topical concerns, with a view to proffering solutions for society.

12. Books on the Air

Pre-selected books of the month will also be discussed on various media like the radio. In addition, a television program called ‘Know Your Book, Know Your World’ will be created based on the idea of the popular ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire’ game show, featuring questions on the book of the month.

13. Opening and Closing Ceremonies

The opening and closing ceremonies for PH WBC 2014 will take place over the span of one week and will entail activities such as: celebrities reading to children, a special launch of the PH WBC 2014 theme song, music and drama performances, special artistic interpretations of the theme “Books: Windows to our World of Opportunities”, to name a few.

Know your rights and responsibilities as a volunteer

Earlier, you read that being a volunteer could be a way of building your experience! The popular image of a volunteer is the selfless, giving, altruistic individual who’s willing to take on any task that comes their way. While this is perhaps a noble idea, there are actually very real rights and responsibilities to volunteering. Here are some of our suggestions of rights and responsibilities for you to keep in mind as well as discuss with your volunteer manager or supervisor:

A volunteer’s rights

1. The right to feel safe

One of the benefits of volunteering is that we can decide to intentionally leave our comfort zones in order to experience new and challenging situations, environments, or roles. However, there is a big difference between feeling off-center or uncomfortable and feeling at risk or unsafe. As a volunteer, you have the right to be apprised of any potential risks as well as have precautionary measures and safety procedures in place to ensure your physical and emotional well-being.

2. The right to information about your volunteer role or project

Whether it’s questions about the application process (why do I need to have a background check? when will I find out if I’ve been accepted?) or the volunteer role or project itself (who will I be working with? how will my efforts make a difference?), you have the right to know the who, what, when, why, and how of your volunteer position.

3. The right to feel valued

Volunteering—whether for two hours or two years—is a significant commitment that you choose to make. In return, you have the right to feel that your time and contribution—however long you’ve volunteered and whatever your task—is valued. Similarly, you have the right to feel that an organization or volunteer effort is using your skills and talents well (keeping in mind that they may not always have the capacity to take on some or all of your ideas or proposed projects) and that the work you do—and this can be anything from filing papers in an office to coaching a youth sports team—has meaning and makes a difference.

4. The right to negotiate your volunteer role

Find yourself in a volunteer position that just isn’t working for you? You have the right to talk to your volunteer manager or supervisor to discuss ways you might be able to shift your role or take on another project or position. And if you still can’t find a good fit…

5. The right to leave

you have the right to leave. This isn’t a decision that should be made hastily but, if after talking to and working with your volunteer manager or supervisor, you still feel unhappy, unappreciated, or unsatisfied with your volunteer experience, you do have the right to do something, or go somewhere, else. (A side note: should you leave, it’s best to avoid bad-mouthing the organization in the community. Not only might your negative experience have been unique to your circumstances, but publicly bashing them can both hurt the organization’s reputation and ability to work towards their mission as well as perhaps unintentionally burn some bridges of your own as you seek to volunteer—or even work—somewhere else.)

advertise here

A volunteer’s responsibilities

1. The responsibility to communicate your needs

Feel like your work isn’t meaningful? Not what you thought you’d signed up for? Or just bored and ready for something else? Talk to your volunteer manager or supervisor, providing specifics about your dissatisfaction and at least a few suggestions of ways to make it better. If you don’t let them know that you’re not getting from the experience what you’d hoped, they can’t work with you to improve things. Similarly, don’t hesitate to let them know if you feel you need additional tools, training, or support; if they can’t provide it directly, they should at least be able to point you in the right direction.

2. The responsibility to follow through on your obligations

There’s a pervasive myth that volunteers are unreliable. While of course this isn’t true across the board, there are plenty of flaky volunteers who reinforce such negative perceptions. Help improve the reputation of volunteers worldwide by doing what you say you’ll do, whether it’s honoring the volunteer role and schedule you’d agreed to, providing ample notice if you’re unable to perform your tasks or responsibilities, saying no or stepping away from volunteering when necessary, or simply serving as a good representative of the organization in the community.

3. The responsibility to not promise what you can’t deliver

While related to #2, this one is worth singling out as it’s fairly easy to unintentionally promise too much when one is excited about making a difference. This is especially important to avoid if you are working with a vulnerable population like children. An example: say you’ve promised to take a young person whom you’re mentoring to a concert. You then forget or get busy and are unable to go. By not following through with your promise, not only can you potentially hurt the reputation of the organization and undermine its work but, more importantly, you could unintentionally do harm by giving the young person a reason not to trust you—or possibly even others.

4. The responsibility to honor the organization’s investment in you

Another pervasive myth about volunteering is that volunteers are free. In fact, organizations invest quite a bit in their volunteers via staff time, tools, training, and so on. This is why it’s important to research your volunteer position first to determine if it’s a good fit for you, and, once you’re in the role, to always first try negotiating your volunteer role if you’re unsatisfied, rather than just suddenly leaving.

5. The responsibility to take care of yourself

Last but most certainly not least, you have the responsibility to make sure that you aren’t overextending yourself, burning out, or causing yourself physical, mental, or emotional harm by taking on roles that aren’t a good fit or that you aren’t prepared for. While some stress and burnout may be inevitable depending on the project—for example, anyone volunteering in a hospice is likely to have some difficult moments—you can significantly limit it by seeking out support (talk to your volunteer manager and fellow volunteers), taking a break (either as you’re volunteering or stepping away from volunteering altogether for a while), injecting some fun into your service portfolio (even if it’s just a one day gig on the side), and having realistic expectations about what can be accomplished and when.

Happy Volunteering!

Be a volunteer for the World Mental Health Week

Every year, the World Health Organization recommends a day to commemorate the World Mental Health Day. This day is the 10th of October.

There is usually a theme for every year. For last year, it was Depression: A global crisis. This was celebrated by Pinnacle Medical Services by giving a public lecture, radio and television talks, and visits to some schools within the Lagos metropolis.

For this year, the theme is “Mental Health and Older Adult”. This means psychological and mental health challenges that are common among people 65years and above. Such common disorders like dementia (vascular dementia, alhzemier disease etc), depression in the elderly, psychosis among others.

SpeakOut Initiative, the brain child of Pinnacle Medical Services, a health and wellness centre wishes to use this opportunity to educate, enlighten and inform the society about these disorders and the burden of care that can be imposed on the families.

For example, people often mistake senility as a normal aging process. The fact is *Senility = Dementia.*….

As a volunteer, this is how you can come in;

1.) Volunteer to attend any or all of the various programmes for the week
2.) Link to potential sponsors, either in kind or cash
3.) Attend one or more of the radio and or Tv talk shows. Also, helping to link the team to the various media platforms
4.) Donating gift items for the old people’s home (clothes, provision, etc)
5.) Most importantly, giving us your time and energy.

Add 32F8A2BB on the BlackBerry Messenger for similar updates

It is noteworthy that the team is open to suggestions from you, either an addition or subtraction. The goal is to have an awesome and successful outing.

Proposed giggles, radio and television talks before the week activities:

• Sunday, 29th September:  A one hour wellness talk with Dj Gosporella and Dami of Beats Fm. We will be discussing on our activities for the week
